January 2024…I've Got My mind set on you
George Harrison said it better than I could have when it comes to how I'm feeling about the farm as January comes to a close. I've got my mind set on the farm. It's going to take patience and time to do it right. But my mind is set, so here we go!
We started the new year off evaluating housing for the animals and designing a planting map for the field. The results? We plan to build a larger animal barn, expand our pastures into the woodlands a bit, and have designed a separate flower barn where we will make our bouquets, dry out herbs, and make our soaps and baked goods. We even hope to host some activities during the summer months and look forward to having an indoor space to do it! As for our field, here are some examples of what you will see in bloom this coming year. It will be so lovely to wander through!
Culinary herbs such as basil, thyme, oregano, dill, sage, parsley, rosemary and stevia
Herbs for teas including a variety of mints, chamomile, rose hip, and jasmine
Herbs for healing including lavender, witch hazel and calendula
Flowers such as tulips, daffodils, lilies, irises, zinnias, wildflowers, sunflowers and roses
We will also be offering a variety of seasonal vegetables and will be installing a small orchard to enjoy in years to come.
We are grateful for our animals who have kept us active on the farm this winter, and who continue to help us clear the areas we will plant and make compost to nourish the soil. They did well with our cold snaps in early January and are doing their best now to stay out of the mud!
